The Journey

From university to industry leader in progression mechanics

Early Years

Marcus discovered his passion for game design while studying computer science at RMIT University in Melbourne during the early 2010s. It wasn’t an instant switch — he spent time in traditional software development first. But by his second year, he knew games were where his real interests lay. He pivoted entirely to games development, focusing on systems design and how players actually engage with mechanics rather than just the flashy surface-level stuff.

Building Expertise

Over the past 14 years, he’s worked across indie studios and larger development houses. The real learning happened in the trenches — playtesting with actual players, watching where they’d drop off, analyzing why certain progression curves kept them engaged. He became obsessed with the mathematical side of progression systems. How do you make players feel accomplished without grinding them to death? What’s the right balance between clicking and idle generation?

His breakthrough came in 2016. He published a detailed analysis of idle game monetization that actually resonated with developers. It wasn’t another “10 tips” listicle — it was research-backed thinking about how to monetize without making players feel cheated. The piece gained traction in developer communities, leading to speaking engagements at Australian game development conferences.

Current Focus

At Clicker Forge Pty Ltd, Marcus leads development of incremental gameplay frameworks. He’s mentoring junior designers on building engagement loops that actually feel good. He’s particularly interested in how Bendigo-based incremental gameplay philosophies differ from traditional western design approaches — and how cultural factors genuinely influence player preferences for progression mechanics. What drives him is creating systems where players feel genuine accomplishment through meaningful progression, not just time investment. His approach emphasizes playtesting, data analysis, and iterative refinement to understand exactly why players stay engaged.
